So he said to the man working the vineyard, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’

Now let me alone so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, and of you I will make a great nation.”

He cried aloud and said: ‘Cut down the tree and chop off its branches; strip off its foliage and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from beneath it and the birds from its branches.

“When you come into the land and plant all kinds of trees for food, then you shall regard their fruit as forbidden; three years it shall be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten.

I will order my blessing for you in the sixth year, so that it will yield a crop for three years.

Every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it.

Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”

He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit.

Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
