If he would take his rod away from me and not let dread of him terrify me,

Remove your stroke from me; I am worn down by the blows of your hand.

No fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy on you.

Will not his majesty terrify you and the dread of him fall upon you?

Who considers the power of your anger? Your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you.

“At this also my heart trembles and leaps out of its place.

For I was in terror of calamity from God, and I could not have faced his majesty.

Therefore I am terrified at his presence; when I consider, I am in dread of him.

then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with scourges,

“You chastise mortals in punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is dear to them; surely everyone is a mere breath. Selah
