Thus says the Lord of hosts: The broad wall of Babylon shall be leveled to the ground, and her high gates shall be burned with fire. The peoples exhaust themselves for nothing, the nations only for fire, and they have become weary.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain.

You are wearied with your many consultations; let those who study the heavens stand up and save you, those who gaze at the stars and at each new moon predict what shall befall you.

I will punish Bel in Babylon and make him disgorge what he has swallowed. The nations shall no longer stream to him; the wall of Babylon has fallen.

and say, ‘Thus shall Babylon sink, to rise no more, because of the disasters that I am bringing on her.’ ” Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

We tried to heal Babylon, but she could not be healed. Forsake her, and let each of us go to our own country, for her judgment has reached up to heaven and has been lifted up even to the skies.

They all deceive their neighbors, and no one speaks the truth; they have taught their tongues to speak lies; they commit iniquity and are too weary to repent.

With a yoke on our necks we are hard driven; we are weary; we are given no rest.

Is it not from the Lord of hosts that peoples labor only to feed the flames and nations weary themselves for nothing?
