The land trembles and writhes, for the Lord’s purposes against Babylon stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant.

and Babylon shall become a heap of ruins, a den of jackals, an object of horror and of hissing, without inhabitant.

and say, ‘O Lord, you yourself threatened to destroy this place so that neither humans nor animals shall live in it, and it shall be desolate forever.’

The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.”

Is this the exultant city that lived secure, that said to itself, “I am, and there is no one else”? What a desolation it has become, a lair for wild animals! Everyone who passes by it hisses and shakes the fist.

and I am extremely angry with the nations that are at ease, for while I was only a little angry, they made the disaster worse.

The next generation, your children who rise up after you, as well as the foreigner who comes from a distant country, will see the devastation of that land and the afflictions with which the Lord has afflicted it—
