In the time of his distress he became yet more faithless to the Lord—this same King Ahaz.

But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their work? Get to your labors!”

In vain I have struck down your children; they accepted no correction. Your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

But if any nation or kingdom will not serve this king, Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, then I will punish that nation with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, says the Lord, until I have completed its destruction by his hand.

And as for King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials, I will hand them over to their enemies and to those who seek their lives, to the army of the king of Babylon, which has withdrawn from you.

And concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah you shall say: Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land and will cut off from it human beings and animals?”

Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.

But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be handed over to the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand.”

Thus says the Lord: This city shall surely be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.”

Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to be put to death because he is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city and all the people by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.”

So Ebed-melech left the king’s house and spoke to the king,

O Lord, do your eyes not look for truth? You have struck them, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to turn back.

My transgressions were bound into a yoke; by his hand they were fastened together; they weigh on my neck, sapping my strength; the Lord handed me over to those whom I cannot withstand.

but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”

and said to him, “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?”
