Therefore the word of the Lord will be to them, “Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little,” in order that they may go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken.

therefore thus says the Lord God, “See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: ‘One who trusts will not panic.’

We grope like the blind along a wall, groping like those who have no eyes; we stumble at noon as in the twilight, among the vigorous as though we were dead.

and will eat curds because of the abundance of milk that they give, for everyone left in the land shall eat curds and honey.

Therefore thus says the Lord: See, I am laying before this people stumbling blocks against which they shall stumble; parents and children together, neighbor and friend shall perish.

And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”

Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.”

The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.”

Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him.

Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,

but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to gentiles,
