Woe to the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, at the head of the fertile valley, those overcome with wine!

In the days of King Pekah of Israel, King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria.

Pekah son of Remaliah killed one hundred twenty thousand in Judah in one day, all of them valiant warriors, because they had abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors.

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink; they are confused with wine; they stagger with strong drink; they err in vision; they stumble in giving judgment.

Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who linger in the evening to be inflamed by wine,

Woe to those who are heroes in drinking wine and valiant at mixing drink,

for before the child knows how to call ‘My father’ or ‘My mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away by the king of Assyria.”

So the Lord raised adversaries against them and stirred up their enemies,

The Lord sent a word against Jacob, and it fell on Israel,

and all the people knew it— Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria— but in pride and arrogance of heart they said:

prostitution. Wine and new wine take away the understanding.

Israel’s pride testifies against him; Ephraim stumbles in his guilt; Judah also stumbles with them.

Ephraim shall become a desolation in the day of punishment; among the tribes of Israel I declare what is sure.

In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing; Ephraim’s prostitution is there; Israel is defiled.

On the day of our king the officials became sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with mockers.

I will break your proud glory, and I will make your sky like iron and your earth like copper.

But you made the nazirites drink wine and commanded the prophets, saying, “You shall not prophesy.”

they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge; and in the house of their God they drink wine bought with fines they imposed.

Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who are on Mount Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their husbands, “Bring something to drink!”

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria, the notables of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel resorts!

Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and lounge on their couches and eat lambs from the flock and calves from the stall,

who drink wine from bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!

The Lord God has sworn by himself (says the Lord, the God of hosts): I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds, and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.
