When Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech’s servants had seized,

the herders of Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herders, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the well Esek, because they contended with him.

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me odious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites; my numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.”

So I said, “The thing that you are doing is not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God, to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies?

But some shepherds came and drove them away. Moses got up and came to their defense and watered their flock.

It is honorable to refrain from strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

for you are still fleshly. For as long as there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not fleshly and behaving according to human inclinations?

idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions,

Conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time.

so that you may behave properly toward outsiders and be dependent on no one.

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, despicable, hating one another.

For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind.

Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you?

Conduct yourselves honorably among the gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honorable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.
