three gates: the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah, and the gate of Levi, the gates of the city being named after the tribes of Israel.
While Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.
I will make your pinnacles of rubies, your gates of jewels, and all your wall of precious stones.
Your gates shall always be open; day and night they shall not be shut, so that nations shall bring you their wealth, with their kings led in procession.
These shall be the exits of the city: On the north side, which is to be four thousand five hundred cubits by measure,
On the east side, which is to be four thousand five hundred cubits, three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin, and the gate of Dan.
And the twelve gates are twelve pearls, each of the gates is a single pearl, and the street of the city is pure gold, transparent as glass.
Its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.
