When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.

He said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”

In distress you called, and I rescued you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah

Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off?

This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’

From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, while you heard his words coming out of the fire.

When you heard the voice out of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders,

But now why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any longer, we shall die.

Go near, you yourself, and hear all that the Lord our God will say. Then tell us everything that the Lord our God tells you, and we will listen and do it.’

(At that time I was standing between the Lord and you to declare to you the word of the Lord, for you were afraid because of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said:
