But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task,

Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher; all is vanity.

So I hated life because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a chasing after wind.

I searched with my mind how to cheer my body with wine—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, until I might see what was good for mortals to do under heaven during the few days of their life.

For the fate of humans and the fate of animals is the same; as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and humans have no advantage over the animals, for all is vanity.

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from one person’s envy of another. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

Better is a handful with quiet than two handfuls with toil and a chasing after wind.

Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire; this also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, how one’s eyes see sleep neither day nor night,

This is an evil in all that happens under the sun, that the same fate comes to everyone. Moreover, the hearts of humans are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

but test everything; hold fast to what is good;
