Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

But Paul replied, “They have beaten us in public, uncondemned, men who are Romans, and have thrown us into prison, and now are they going to discharge us in secret? Certainly not! Let them come and take us out themselves.”

Some in the crowd shouted one thing, some another, and as he could not learn the facts because of the uproar, he ordered him to be brought into the barracks.

This man was seized by the Jews and was about to be killed by them, but when I had learned that he was a Roman, I came with the guard and rescued him.

When they had examined me, the Romans wanted to release me because there was no reason for the death penalty in my case.

Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection.
