But Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gateway to speak with him privately, and there he stabbed him in the stomach. So he died on account of the blood of Asahel, Joab’s brother.

Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah and made them afraid to build,

Therefore all hands will be feeble, and every human heart will melt,

Strengthen the weak hands and make firm the feeble knees.

The king of Babylon heard news of them, and his hands fell helpless; anguish seized him, pain like that of a woman in labor.

“We have heard news of them; our hands fall helpless; anguish has taken hold of us, pain as of a woman in labor.

On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: “Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.
