Then all the people came to persuade David to eat something while it was still day, but David swore, saying, “So may God do to me and more, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun goes down!”

My heart is stricken and withered like grass; I am too wasted to eat my bread.

Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting; no entertainment was brought to him, and sleep fled from him.

He refused and said, “I will not eat.” But his servants, together with the woman, urged him, and he listened to their words. So he got up from the ground and sat on the bed.
