Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife; only be valiant for me and fight the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, “I will not raise a hand against him; let the Philistines deal with him.”

And now let this present that your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow my lord.

Please forgive the trespass of your servant, for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the battles of the Lord, and evil shall not be found in you so long as you live.

David also captured all the flocks and herds, which were driven ahead of the other cattle; people said, “This is David’s spoil.”

From that day forward he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel; it continues to the present day.
