Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.

For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.

Happy are those whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law,

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future.

Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.

Yet they did not listen or incline their ear; they stiffened their necks and would not hear or receive instruction.

The lions have roared against him, they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.

For after I had turned away I repented; and after I was discovered, I struck my thigh; I was ashamed, and I was dismayed because I bore the disgrace of my youth.”

They have turned their backs to me, not their faces; though I have taught them persistently, they would not listen and accept correction.

O Jerusalem, wash your heart clean of wickedness so that you may be saved. How long shall your evil schemes lodge within you?

Therefore thus says the Lord God: My anger and my wrath shall be poured out on this place, on human beings and animals, on the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.

You shall say to them: This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.

And I will bring to an end the sound of mirth and gladness, the voice of the bride and bridegroom in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for the land shall become a waste.

I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a lair of jackals; and I will make the towns of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

When she carried on her whorings so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust from her, as I had turned from her sister.

For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, “I will go after my lovers; they give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.”

Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them until no one is left. Woe to them indeed when I depart from them!

Then the land shall enjoy its sabbath years as long as it lies desolate, while you are in the land of your enemies; then the land shall rest, and enjoy its sabbath years.

I said, “Surely the city will fear me, it will accept correction; it will not lose sight of all that I have brought upon it.” But they were the more eager to make all their deeds corrupt.

If they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern what the end would be.
