On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine became so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land.

As the siege continued, famine in Samaria became so great that a donkey's head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and one-fourth of a kab of dove's dung for five shekels of silver.

When he summoned famine against the land, and broke every staff of bread,

You have made your people suffer hard things; you have given us wine to drink that made us reel.

For now the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts, is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and staff— all support of bread, and all support of water—

All her people groan as they search for bread; they trade their treasures for food to revive their strength. Look, O Lord, and see how worthless I have become.

We must pay for the water we drink; the wood we get must be bought.

We get our bread at the peril of our lives, because of the sword in the wilderness.

Mortal, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it, and break its staff of bread and send famine upon it, and cut off from it human beings and animals,

Then he said to me, “See, I will let you have cow's dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread.”

when I loose against you my deadly arrows of famine, arrows for destruction, which I will let loose to destroy you, and when I bring more and more famine upon you, and break your staff of bread.

When I break your staff of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven, and they shall dole out your bread by weight; and though you eat, you shall not be satisfied.

so two or three towns wandered to one town to drink water, and were not satisfied; yet you did not return to me, says the Lord.

When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature call out, “Come!” I looked, and there was a black horse! Its rider held a pair of scales in his hand,
