For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not turned from my God to follow evil.

They agreed that anyone who refused to seek the Lord, the God of Israel, would be put to death—whether young or old, man or woman.

The wicked are too proud to seek God. They seem to think that God is dead.

But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O Lord. Take them away with those who do evil. May Israel have peace!

Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or do good.

Oh, what a sinful nation they are— loaded down with a burden of guilt. They are evil people, corrupt children who have rejected the Lord. They have despised the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him.

“But, dear family of Jacob, you refuse to ask for my help. You have grown tired of me, O Israel!

The Syrians from the east and the Philistines from the west will bare their fangs and devour Israel. But even then the Lord’s anger will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to strike.

For after all this punishment, the people will still not repent. They will not seek the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you— on the peoples that do not call upon your name. For they have devoured your people Israel; they have devoured and consumed them, making the land a desolate wilderness.

You have abandoned me and turned your back on me,” says the Lord. “Therefore, I will raise my fist to destroy you. I am tired of always giving you another chance.

“For my people have done two evil things: They have abandoned me— the fountain of living water. And they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all!

And you have brought this upon yourselves by rebelling against the Lord your God, even though he was leading you on the way!

But despite all this, her faithless sister Judah has never sincerely returned to me. She has only pretended to be sorry. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

“If righteous people turn away from their righteous behavior and ignore the obstacles I put in their way, they will die. And if you do not warn them, they will die in their sins. None of their righteous acts will be remembered, and I will hold you responsible for their deaths.

For my people are determined to desert me. They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honor me.

Their arrogance testifies against them, yet they don’t return to the Lord their God or even try to find him.

Burning like an oven, they consume their leaders. They kill their kings one after another, and no one cries to me for help.

No one can tell it anything; it refuses all correction. It does not trust in the Lord or draw near to its God.

No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God.

So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak?

“But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry with them,

“I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has refused to obey my command.” Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out to the Lord all night.
