And since Fair Havens was an exposed harbor—a poor place to spend the winter—most of the crew wanted to go on to Phoenix, farther up the coast of Crete, and spend the winter there. Phoenix was a good harbor with only a southwest and northwest exposure.

Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.

They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth.

These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.

I left you on the island of Crete so you could complete our work there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you.

These false teachers are like unthinking animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed. They scoff at things they do not understand, and like animals, they will be destroyed.

They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong.
