One day Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, it’s time that I found a permanent home for you, so that you will be provided for.

And please remember me and do me a favor when things go well for you. Mention me to Pharaoh, so he might let me out of this place.

You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be!

But if a man thinks that he’s treating his fiancée improperly and will inevitably give in to his passion, let him marry her as he wishes. It is not a sin.

If you obey all the decrees and commands I am giving you today, all will be well with you and your children. I am giving you these instructions so you will enjoy a long life in the land the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

So I advise these younger widows to marry again, have children, and take care of their own homes. Then the enemy will not be able to say anything against them.

But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

May the Lord bless you with the security of another marriage.” Then she kissed them good-bye, and they all broke down and wept.

So Ruth worked alongside the women in Boaz’s fields and gathered grain with them until the end of the barley harvest. Then she continued working with them through the wheat harvest in early summer. And all the while she lived with her mother-in-law.

Boaz is a close relative of ours, and he’s been very kind by letting you gather grain with his young women. Tonight he will be winnowing barley at the threshing floor.
