New Living Translation

The man’s name was Elimelech, and his wife was Naomi. Their two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in the land of Judah. And when they reached Moab, they settled there.

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf.

One day a young Levite, who had been living in Bethlehem in Judah, arrived in that area.

So Moab was conquered by Israel that day, and there was peace in the land for eighty years.

Then Elimelech died, and Naomi was left with her two sons.

both Mahlon and Kilion died. This left Naomi alone, without her two sons or her husband.

Now there was a wealthy and influential man in Bethlehem named Boaz, who was a relative of Naomi’s husband, Elimelech.

Then Boaz said to the elders and to the crowd standing around, “You are witnesses that today I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilion, and Mahlon.

There was a man named Elkanah who lived in Ramah in the region of Zuph in the hill country of Ephraim. He was the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, of Ephraim.

Now David was the son of a man named Jesse, an Ephrathite from Bethlehem in the land of Judah. Jesse was an old man at that time, and he had eight sons.

Soon the Israelite and Philistine forces stood facing each other, army against army.
