So he declared he would destroy them. But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the Lord and the people. He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them.

Yet he was merciful and forgave their sins and did not destroy them all. Many times he held back his anger and did not unleash his fury!

“Don’t get so upset, my lord,” Aaron replied. “You yourself know how evil these people are.

In that day you will sing: “I will praise you, O Lord! You were angry with me, but not anymore. Now you comfort me.

“Comfort, comfort my people,” says your God.

“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem. Tell her that her sad days are gone and her sins are pardoned. Yes, the Lord has punished her twice over for all her sins.”

He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”

In those days,” says the Lord, “no sin will be found in Israel or in Judah, for I will forgive the remnant I preserve.

You will remember your sins and cover your mouth in silent shame when I forgive you of all that you have done. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”

Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.”

Once again you will have compassion on us. You will trample our sins under your feet and throw them into the depths of the ocean!

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a large nation, just as he swore to your ancestors.

“Rejoice with him, you heavens, and let all of God’s angels worship him. Rejoice with his people, you Gentiles, and let all the angels be strengthened in him. For he will avenge the blood of his children; he will take revenge against his enemies. He will repay those who hate him and cleanse his people’s land.”
