“I am disgusted with my life. Let me complain freely. My bitter soul must complain.

My friends scorn me, but I pour out my tears to God.

“My complaint today is still a bitter one, and I try hard not to groan aloud.

I, too, have been assigned months of futility, long and weary nights of misery.

The dead cannot sing praises to the Lord, for they have gone into the silence of the grave.

Hear me, Lord, and have mercy on me. Help me, O Lord.”

You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh.

Hear my prayer, O Lord! Listen to my cries for help! Don’t ignore my tears. For I am your guest— a traveler passing through, as my ancestors were before me.

Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?”

I am exhausted from crying for help; my throat is parched. My eyes are swollen with weeping, waiting for my God to help me.

Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction?

My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O Lord; I lift my hands to you for mercy.

For the dead cannot praise you; they cannot raise their voices in praise. Those who go down to the grave can no longer hope in your faithfulness.

Now, Jeremiah, say this to them: “Night and day my eyes overflow with tears. I cannot stop weeping, for my virgin daughter—my precious people— has been struck down and lies mortally wounded.

“For all these things I weep; tears flow down my cheeks. No one is here to comfort me; any who might encourage me are far away. My children have no future, for the enemy has conquered us.”

She sobs through the night; tears stream down her cheeks. Among all her lovers, there is no one left to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her and become her enemies.

I have cried until the tears no longer come; my heart is broken. My spirit is poured out in agony as I see the desperate plight of my people. Little children and tiny babies are fainting and dying in the streets.

Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them.
