Psalm 51:1

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.

Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath.

He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love.

Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the Lord’s miraculous deeds. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea.

But deal well with me, O Sovereign Lord, for the sake of your own reputation! Rescue me because you are so faithful and good.

I am your servant; deal with me in unfailing love, and teach me your decrees.

The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.

Answer me when I call to you, O God who declares me innocent. Free me from my troubles. Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house; I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.

Don’t keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt.

But I keep praying to you, Lord, hoping this time you will show me favor. In your unfailing love, O God, answer my prayer with your sure salvation.

Answer my prayers, O Lord, for your unfailing love is wonderful. Take care of me, for your mercy is so plentiful.

Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? Interlude

“I—yes, I alone—will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again.

I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”

Lord, look down from heaven; look from your holy, glorious home, and see us. Where is the passion and the might you used to show on our behalf? Where are your mercy and compassion now?

I will tell of the Lord’s unfailing love. I will praise the Lord for all he has done. I will rejoice in his great goodness to Israel, which he has granted according to his mercy and love.

Lord, you know all about their murderous plots against me. Don’t forgive their crimes and blot out their sins. Let them die before you. Deal with them in your anger.

Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love.

“O my God, lean down and listen to me. Open your eyes and see our despair. See how your city—the city that bears your name—lies in ruins. We make this plea, not because we deserve help, but because of your mercy.

But the Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.

Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.

He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
