and boasted to them about his great wealth and his many children. He bragged about the honors the king had given him and how he had been promoted over all the other nobles and officials.

The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.

This is what the Lord says: “Bodies will be scattered across the fields like clumps of manure, like bundles of grain after the harvest. No one will be left to bury them.”

“But I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt. And I will make you live in tents again, as you do each year at the Festival of Shelters.

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

“But the others replied, ‘We don’t have enough for all of us. Go to a shop and buy some for yourselves.’

Is anything worth more than your soul?

He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.
