When someone told David that his adviser Ahithophel was now backing Absalom, David prayed, “O Lord, let Ahithophel give Absalom foolish advice!”
Then Absalom turned to Ahithophel and asked him, “What should I do next?”
The battle raged all across the countryside, and more men died because of the forest than were killed by the sword.
The proud have set a trap to catch me; they have stretched out a net; they have placed traps all along the way. Interlude

O Lord, oppose those who oppose me. Fight those who fight against me.
Declare me not guilty, O Lord my God, for you give justice. Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.
You will destroy those who tell lies. The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.
For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God. Interlude
Gather the nations before you. Rule over them from on high.
The Lord judges the nations. Declare me righteous, O Lord, for I am innocent, O Most High!
End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God.
My God, rescue me from the power of the wicked, from the clutches of cruel oppressors.
It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall.
For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.
For their Redeemer is strong; he himself will bring their charges against you.
I will be patient as the Lord punishes me, for I have sinned against him. But after that, he will take up my case and give me justice for all I have suffered from my enemies. The Lord will bring me into the light, and I will see his righteousness.
My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide.
He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.
May the Lord therefore judge which of us is right and punish the guilty one. He is my advocate, and he will rescue me from your power!”
