While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, one of David’s counselors who lived in Giloh. Soon many others also joined Absalom, and the conspiracy gained momentum.

My close friends detest me. Those I loved have turned against me.

But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.

Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend.

What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God.

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.

I have heard the many rumors about me. They call me “The Man Who Lives in Terror.” They threaten, “If you say anything, we will report it.” Even my old friends are watching me, waiting for a fatal slip. “He will trap himself,” they say, “and then we will get our revenge on him.”

“All your allies will turn against you. They will help to chase you from your land. They will promise you peace while plotting to deceive and destroy you. Your trusted friends will set traps for you, and you won’t even know about it.

And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’”
