Your arrows have struck deep, and your blows are crushing me.

For the Almighty has struck me down with his arrows. Their poison infects my spirit. God’s terrors are lined up against me.

For they will turn and run when they see your arrows aimed at them.

Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude

Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.

But God himself will shoot them with his arrows, suddenly striking them down.

He has drawn his bow and made me the target for his arrows.

The Lord struck them down until they had all been eliminated from the community.

Would you wait for them to grow up and refuse to marry someone else? No, of course not, my daughters! Things are far more bitter for me than for you, because the Lord himself has raised his fist against me.”

The people summoned the Philistine rulers again and begged them, “Please send the Ark of the God of Israel back to its own country, or it will kill us all.” For the deadly plague from God had already begun, and great fear was sweeping across the town.

Then the Lord’s heavy hand struck the people of Ashdod and the nearby villages with a plague of tumors.

If they cross the border of our land and go to Beth-shemesh, we will know it was the Lord who brought this great disaster upon us. If they don’t, we will know it was not his hand that caused the plague. It came simply by chance.”
