Yet my friends laugh at me, for I call on God and expect an answer. I am a just and blameless man, yet they laugh at me.

People jeer and laugh at me. They slap my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me.

I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off criticism and shake my head at you.

I am a joke to people everywhere; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn.

Silence their lying lips— those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly.

You have made us the butt of their jokes; they shake their heads at us in scorn.

The Lord, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, says to the one who is despised and rejected by the nations, to the one who is the servant of rulers: “Kings will stand at attention when you pass by. Princes will also bow low because of the Lord, the faithful one, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.

Whom do you mock, making faces and sticking out your tongues? You children of sinners and liars!

They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”

“Get out!” he told them. “The girl isn’t dead; she’s only asleep.” But the crowd laughed at him.

When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified.

The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days.

The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at him.

Then Herod and his soldiers began mocking and ridiculing Jesus. Finally, they put a royal robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.
