For the Lord saw the bitter suffering of everyone in Israel, and that there was no one in Israel, slave or free, to help them.

O Lord, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide when I am in trouble?

O Lord, you know all about this. Do not stay silent. Do not abandon me now, O Lord.

Do not abandon me, O Lord. Do not stand at a distance, my God.

Come and redeem me; free me from my enemies.

O God, don’t stay away. My God, please hurry to help me.

Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother’s womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you!

He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.

I was amazed to see that no one intervened to help the oppressed. So I myself stepped in to save them with my strong arm, and my wrath sustained me.

But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.” At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. “I don’t even know the man,” he said.

Peter swore, “A curse on me if I’m lying—I don’t know the man!” And immediately the rooster crowed.

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.

“Indeed, the Lord will give justice to his people, and he will change his mind about his servants, when he sees their strength is gone and no one is left, slave or free.

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God.
