like a worker who longs for the shade, like a servant waiting to be paid.

Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?”

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods,

O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.

I long, yes, I faint with longing to enter the courts of the Lord. With my whole being, body and soul, I will shout joyfully to the living God.

Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? Do the dead rise up and praise you? Interlude

My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O Lord; I lift my hands to you for mercy.

“All right,” Moses replied. “As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my hands and pray to the Lord. Then the thunder and hail will stop, and you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord.

The parched ground will become a pool, and springs of water will satisfy the thirsty land. Marsh grass and reeds and rushes will flourish where desert jackals once lived.

On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!
