Psalm 127:1

Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.

So the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon, just as he had promised. And Hiram and Solomon made a formal alliance of peace.

So take this seriously. The Lord has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work.”

Then David continued, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly.

Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations.”

I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer.

I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there?

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven.

What if the Lord had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat:

Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever.

When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream!

Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king’s son.

There he built his sanctuary as high as the heavens, as solid and enduring as the earth.

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

The watchmen stopped me as they made their rounds, and I asked, “Have you seen the one I love?”

The night watchmen found me as they made their rounds. They beat and bruised me and stripped off my veil, those watchmen on the walls.

I, the Lord, will watch over it, watering it carefully. Day and night I will watch so no one can harm it.

For the leaders of my people— the Lord’s watchmen, his shepherds— are blind and ignorant. They are like silent watchdogs that give no warning when danger comes. They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.

O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls; they will pray day and night, continually. Take no rest, all you who pray to the Lord.

Raise the battle flag against Babylon! Reinforce the guard and station the watchmen. Prepare an ambush, for the Lord will fulfill all his plans against Babylon.

The news is passed from one runner to the next as the messengers hurry to tell the king that his city has been captured.

And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless.

It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow.

I fear for you. Perhaps all my hard work with you was for nothing.

Remember the Lord your God. He is the one who gives you power to be successful, in order to fulfill the covenant he confirmed to your ancestors with an oath.

But someone told the king of Jericho, “Some Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.”
