For he stands beside the needy, ready to save them from those who condemn them.

The Lord replies, “I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

He gives justice to the oppressed and food to the hungry. The Lord frees the prisoners.

With every bone in my body I will praise him: “Lord, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”

He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them.

Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors.

The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.

Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but helping the poor honors him.

Don’t cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers; don’t take the land of defenseless orphans.

Fathers and mothers are treated with contempt. Foreigners are forced to pay for protection. Orphans and widows are wronged and oppressed among you.

After the servant had done this, he reported, ‘There is still room for more.’

But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?
