Then Ezra left the front of the Temple of God and went to the room of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. He spent the night there without eating or drinking anything. He was still in mourning because of the unfaithfulness of the returned exiles.

“I am disgusted with my life. Let me complain freely. My bitter soul must complain.

My skin has turned dark, and my bones burn with fever.

They lose their appetite for even the most delicious food.

For the Almighty has struck me down with his arrows. Their poison infects my spirit. God’s terrors are lined up against me.

My life passes as swiftly as the evening shadows. I am withering away like grass.

I eat ashes for food. My tears run down into my drink

For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither.

my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you— even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar.

Their insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair. If only one person would show some pity; if only one would turn and comfort me.

I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude

The grass withers and the flowers fade beneath the breath of the Lord. And so it is with people.

He shot his arrows deep into my heart.

I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss.

He remained there blind for three days and did not eat or drink.
