When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am El-Shaddai—‘God Almighty.’ Serve me faithfully and live a blameless life.

“But look, God will not reject a person of integrity, nor will he lend a hand to the wicked.

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

May integrity and honesty protect me, for I put my hope in you.

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.

The crooked heart will not prosper; the lying tongue tumbles into trouble.

While their hatred may be concealed by trickery, their wrongdoing will be exposed in public.

The wicked run away when no one is chasing them, but the godly are as bold as lions.

The blameless will be rescued from harm, but the crooked will be suddenly destroyed.

They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble.

“But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.

So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.

In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light.
