These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel.

A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction.

Sensible children bring joy to their father; foolish children despise their mother.

It is painful to be the parent of a fool; there is no joy for the father of a rebel.

Foolish children bring grief to their father and bitterness to the one who gave them birth.

A foolish child is a calamity to a father; a quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping.

These are more proverbs of Solomon, collected by the advisers of King Hezekiah of Judah.

Be wise, my child, and make my heart glad. Then I will be able to answer my critics.

To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.

Discipline your children, and they will give you peace of mind and will make your heart glad.

The man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but if he hangs around with prostitutes, his wealth is wasted.

Keep this in mind: The Teacher was considered wise, and he taught the people everything he knew. He listened carefully to many proverbs, studying and classifying them.

And who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish? Yet they will control everything I have gained by my skill and hard work under the sun. How meaningless!
