Numbers 35:19

New Living Translation

The victim’s nearest relative is responsible for putting the murderer to death. When they meet, the avenger must put the murderer to death.

You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!”

Then she said, “Please swear to me by the Lord your God that you won’t let anyone take vengeance against my son. I want no more bloodshed.” “As surely as the Lord lives,” he replied, “not a hair on your son’s head will be disturbed!”

Now the rest of the family is demanding, ‘Let us have your son. We will execute him for murdering his brother. He doesn’t deserve to inherit his family’s property.’ They want to extinguish the only coal I have left, and my husband’s name and family will disappear from the face of the earth.”

When Abner arrived back at Hebron, Joab took him aside at the gateway as if to speak with him privately. But then he stabbed Abner in the stomach and killed him in revenge for killing his brother Asahel.

So Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because Abner had killed their brother Asahel at the battle of Gibeon.

These cities will be places of protection from a dead person’s relatives who want to avenge the death. The slayer must not be put to death before being tried by the community.

Or if someone strikes and kills another person with a wooden object, it is murder, and the murderer must be put to death.

So if someone hates another person and waits in ambush, then pushes him or throws something at him and he dies, it is murder.

Or if someone hates another person and hits him with a fist and he dies, it is murder. In such cases, the avenger must put the murderer to death when they meet.

If this should happen, the community must follow these regulations in making a judgment between the slayer and the avenger, the victim’s nearest relative:

and the avenger finds him outside the city and kills him, it will not be considered murder.

In that case, the elders of the murderer’s hometown must send agents to the city of refuge to bring him back and hand him over to the dead person’s avenger to be put to death.

“If the distance to the nearest city of refuge is too far, an enraged avenger might be able to chase down and kill the person who caused the death. Then the slayer would die unfairly, since he had never shown hostility toward the person who died.

Anyone who kills another person accidentally and unintentionally can run to one of these cities; they will be places of refuge from relatives seeking revenge for the person who was killed.

If the relatives of the victim come to avenge the killing, the leaders must not release the slayer to them, for he killed the other person unintentionally and without previous hostility.

“They were my brothers, the sons of my own mother!” Gideon exclaimed. “As surely as the Lord lives, I wouldn’t kill you if you hadn’t killed them.”
