Numbers 30:2

New Living Translation

A man who makes a vow to the Lord or makes a pledge under oath must never break it. He must do exactly what he said he would do.

You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows to him.

I will keep my promises to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again: I will obey your righteous regulations.

Don’t trap yourself by making a rash promise to God and only later counting the cost.

“Or suppose you make a foolish vow of any kind, whether its purpose is for good or for bad. When you realize its foolishness, you must admit your guilt.

Look! A messenger is coming over the mountains with good news! He is bringing a message of peace. Celebrate your festivals, O people of Judah, and fulfill all your vows, for your wicked enemies will never invade your land again. They will be completely destroyed!

Then the people of Israel made this vow to the Lord: “If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroy all their towns.”

“But suppose a woman is married and living in her husband’s home when she makes a vow or binds herself with a pledge.

Go ahead and build towns for your families and pens for your flocks, but do everything you have promised.”

“Blind guides! What sorrow awaits you! For you say that it means nothing to swear ‘by God’s Temple,’ but that it is binding to swear ‘by the gold in the Temple.’

And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding.

The next morning a group of Jews got together and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.

They went to the leading priests and elders and told them, “We have bound ourselves with an oath to eat nothing until we have killed Paul.

But don’t do it! There are more than forty men hiding along the way ready to ambush him. They have vowed not to eat or drink anything until they have killed him. They are ready now, just waiting for your consent.”

Now I call upon God as my witness that I am telling the truth. The reason I didn’t return to Corinth was to spare you from a severe rebuke.

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their ruler and commander of the army. At Mizpah, in the presence of the Lord, Jephthah repeated what he had said to the elders.

When she returned home, her father kept the vow he had made, and she died a virgin. So it has become a custom in Israel
