Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offerings, and I will go to see if the Lord will respond to me. Then I will tell you whatever he reveals to me.” So Balaam went alone to the top of a bare hill,

Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So he took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son.

“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and there he sacrificed as burnt offerings the animals and birds that had been approved for that purpose.

Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God. Aaron and all the elders of Israel came out and joined him in a sacrificial meal in God’s presence.

The Lord called to Moses from the Tabernacle and said to him,

But Balaam replied, “I will speak only the message that the Lord puts in my mouth.”

Then Balaam said to the king, “Stand here by your burnt offerings while I go over there to meet the Lord.”

Balak followed his instructions, and the two of them sacrificed a young bull and a ram on each altar.

But Balaam replied to Balak, “Didn’t I tell you that I can do only what the Lord tells me?”

and God met him there. Balaam said to him, “I have prepared seven altars and have sacrificed a young bull and a ram on each altar.”

By now Balaam realized that the Lord was determined to bless Israel, so he did not resort to divination as before. Instead, he turned and looked out toward the wilderness,

Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

but I would not listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless you, and so I rescued you from Balak.
