The people blamed Moses and said, “If only we had died in the Lord’s presence with our brothers!

They made Moses angry, and he spoke foolishly.

They even spoke against God himself, saying, “God can’t give us food in the wilderness.

So once more the people complained against Moses. “Give us water to drink!” they demanded. “Quiet!” Moses replied. “Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?”

Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of hunger. Starving, they waste away for lack of food from the fields.

Soon the people began to complain about their hardship, and the Lord heard everything they said. Then the Lord’s anger blazed against them, and he sent a fire to rage among them, and he destroyed some of the people in the outskirts of the camp.

“Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”

But 14,700 people died in that plague, in addition to those who had died in the affair involving Korah.
