“Tell the people of Israel to bring you twelve wooden staffs, one from each leader of Israel’s ancestral tribes, and inscribe each leader’s name on his staff.

The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor.

They distributed gifts to the priests who were listed by their families in the genealogical records, and to the Levites twenty years old or older who were listed according to their jobs and their divisions.

The Lord will extend your powerful kingdom from Jerusalem; you will rule over your enemies.

The wicked will not rule the land of the godly, for then the godly might be tempted to do wrong.

Use this sacred oil to anoint the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant,

And take your shepherd’s staff with you, and use it to perform the miraculous signs I have shown you.”

Then the Lord asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied.

A fire has burst out from its branches and devoured its fruit. Its remaining limbs are not strong enough to be a ruler’s scepter. “This is a funeral song, and it will be used in a funeral.”

It is sharpened for terrible slaughter and polished to flash like lightning! Now will you laugh? Those far stronger than you have fallen beneath its power!

It will put them all to the test. What chance do they have? says the Sovereign Lord.

O Lord, protect your people with your shepherd’s staff; lead your flock, your special possession. Though they live alone in a thicket on the heights of Mount Carmel, let them graze in the fertile pastures of Bashan and Gilead as they did long ago.

Then the Lord said to Moses,

Inscribe Aaron’s name on the staff of the tribe of Levi, for there must be one staff for the leader of each ancestral tribe.

On the day Moses set up the Tabernacle, he anointed it and set it apart as holy. He also anointed and set apart all its furnishings and the altar with its utensils.
