Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the Lord.

But in spite of this, the people kept sinning. Despite his wonders, they refused to trust him.

When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.”

When the people heard these stern words, they went into mourning and stopped wearing their jewelry and fine clothes.

We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak. Next to them we felt like grasshoppers, and that’s what they thought, too!”

Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained.

“But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God and refused to go in.

Then you returned and wept before the Lord, but he refused to listen.

And at Kadesh-barnea the Lord sent you out with this command: ‘Go up and take over the land I have given you.’ But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God and refused to put your trust in him or obey him.

but my brothers who went with me frightened the people from entering the Promised Land. For my part, I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.
