Nehemiah 1:11

New Living Translation

O Lord, please hear my prayer! Listen to the prayers of those of us who delight in honoring you. Please grant me success today by making the king favorable to me. Put it into his heart to be kind to me.” In those days I was the king’s cup-bearer.

“So today when I came to the spring, I prayed this prayer: ‘O Lord, God of my master, Abraham, please give me success on this mission.

O Lord, please rescue me from the hand of my brother, Esau. I am afraid that he is coming to attack me, along with my wives and children.

“Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel, because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”

Some time later, Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer and chief baker offended their royal master.

Pharaoh became angry with these two officials,

He then restored the chief cup-bearer to his former position, so he could again hand Pharaoh his cup.

Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.

Finally, the king’s chief cup-bearer spoke up. “Today I have been reminded of my failure,” he told Pharaoh.

May God Almighty give you mercy as you go before the man, so that he will release Simeon and let Benjamin return. But if I must lose my children, so be it.”

“O my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive to all the prayers made to you in this place.

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, the Lord fulfilled the prophecy he had given through Jeremiah. He stirred the heart of Cyrus to put this proclamation in writing and to send it throughout his kingdom:

This Ezra was a scribe who was well versed in the Law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given to the people of Israel. He came up to Jerusalem from Babylon, and the king gave him everything he asked for, because the gracious hand of the Lord his God was on him.

listen to my prayer! Look down and see me praying night and day for your people Israel. I confess that we have sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I have sinned!

Early the following spring, in the month of Nisan, during the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign, I was serving the king his wine. I had never before appeared sad in his presence.

And please give me a letter addressed to Asaph, the manager of the king’s forest, instructing him to give me timber. I will need it to make beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself.” And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me.

He even caused their captors to treat them with kindness.

Hear my cry, O Lord. Pay attention to my prayer.

For you have heard my vows, O God. You have given me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name.

Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry.

For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the Lord.

The king’s heart is like a stream of water directed by the Lord; he guides it wherever he pleases.

I will be merciful to you by making him kind, so he will let you stay here in your land.’

Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.

Pray for us, for our conscience is clear and we want to live honorably in everything we do.
