In the wilderness their desires ran wild, testing God’s patience in that dry wasteland.

They stubbornly tested God in their hearts, demanding the foods they craved.

Again and again they tested God’s patience and provoked the Holy One of Israel.

But they kept testing and rebelling against God Most High. They did not obey his laws.

For there your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw everything I did.

So once more the people complained against Moses. “Give us water to drink!” they demanded. “Quiet!” Moses replied. “Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?”

Moses named the place Massah (which means “test”) and Meribah (which means “arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?”

Look to God’s instructions and teachings! People who contradict his word are completely in the dark.

From now on we will call the arrogant blessed. For those who do evil get rich, and those who dare God to punish them suffer no harm.’”

not one of these people will ever enter that land. They have all seen my glorious presence and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but again and again they have tested me by refusing to listen to my voice.

They asked Jesus, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” “Yes,” Jesus replied. “Haven’t you ever read the Scriptures? For they say, ‘You have taught children and infants to give you praise.’”

Then Jesus asked them, “Didn’t you ever read this in the Scriptures? ‘The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.’

“Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”

But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”

Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”

So why are you now challenging God by burdening the Gentile believers with a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors were able to bear?

And Peter said, “How could the two of you even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord like this? The young men who buried your husband are just outside the door, and they will carry you out, too.”

Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites.

You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah.

There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years.
