“After this period of sixty-two sets of seven, the Anointed One will be killed, appearing to have accomplished nothing, and a ruler will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. The end will come with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

But the rest said, “Wait! Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”

Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.

Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.

just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.

A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.

When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God.

Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
