When those hired first came to get their pay, they assumed they would receive more. But they, too, were paid a day’s wage.

‘Those people worked only one hour, and yet you’ve paid them just as much as you paid us who worked all day in the scorching heat.’

“It could have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor!” So they scolded her harshly.

This made the Pharisees and teachers of religious law complain that he was associating with such sinful people—even eating with them!

But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.

Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.”

But when some of the Jews saw the crowds, they were jealous; so they slandered Paul and argued against whatever he said.

as they try to keep us from preaching the Good News of salvation to the Gentiles. By doing this, they continue to pile up their sins. But the anger of God has caught up with them at last.

These people are grumblers and complainers, living only to satisfy their desires. They brag loudly about themselves, and they flatter others to get what they want.
