Matthew 19:8

Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended.

This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

He went on board the boat to escape the flood—he and his wife and his sons and their wives.

The Lord says, “Don’t harden your hearts as Israel did at Meribah, as they did at Massah in the wilderness.

This is what the Lord says: “Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. But you reply, ‘No, that’s not the road we want!’

They made their hearts as hard as stone, so they could not hear the instructions or the messages that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies had sent them by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. That is why the Lord of Heaven’s Armies was so angry with them.

“Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?” they asked.

And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery—unless his wife has been unfaithful.”

But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him.

So the demons begged, “If you cast us out, send us into that herd of pigs.”

But Jesus responded, “He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.

Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead.

I say this as a concession, not as a command.
