Matthew 16:1

New Living Translation

One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools, or they will become wise in their own estimation.

Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus.

Some Pharisees and teachers of religious law now arrived from Jerusalem to see Jesus. They asked him,

“Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”

Then the Pharisees met together to plot how to trap Jesus into saying something for which he could be arrested.

But Jesus knew their evil motives. “You hypocrites!” he said. “Why are you trying to trap me?

That same day Jesus was approached by some Sadducees—religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:

“The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses.

The next day, on the Sabbath, the leading priests and Pharisees went to see Pilate.

“But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?”

Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?”

Should we pay them, or shouldn’t we?” Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said, “Why are you trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin, and I’ll tell you.”

Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees—religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question:

One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”

Others, trying to test Jesus, demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority.

He saw through their trickery and said,

Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees—religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead.

They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.

The high priest and his officials, who were Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.
