for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.”

From then on Jesus began to tell his disciples plainly that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and that he would suffer many terrible things at the hands of the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but on the third day he would be raised from the dead.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

“As you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”

They told him, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver once said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise from the dead.’

They will mock him, spit on him, flog him with a whip, and kill him, but after three days he will rise again.”

Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead.

Jesus responded, “Elijah is indeed coming first to get everything ready. Yet why do the Scriptures say that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be treated with utter contempt?

Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?”

“Listen to me and remember what I say. The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.”

No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

“All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

If we endure hardship, we will reign with him. If we deny him, he will deny us.
