I ripped the kingdom away from the family of David and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servant David, who obeyed my commands and followed me with all his heart and always did whatever I wanted.

But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others have. He has remained loyal to me, so I will bring him into the land he explored. His descendants will possess their full share of that land.

If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.

Along the way, they came across a man named Simon, who was from Cyrene, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross.

Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “All of you listen,” he said, “and try to understand.

“Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s Kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail.

So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own.

When Jesus heard his answer, he said, “There is still one thing you haven’t done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Then, with the crowds listening, he turned to his disciples and said,

Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha).

where they strengthened the believers. They encouraged them to continue in the faith, reminding them that we must suffer many hardships to enter the Kingdom of God.

We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.

And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, that I face death daily. This is as certain as my pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you.

So if what I eat causes another believer to sin, I will never eat meat again as long as I live—for I don’t want to cause another believer to stumble.

Even though I am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ.

My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.

I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death,

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.

I am glad when I suffer for you in my body, for I am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for his body, the church.

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Yet we hear that some of you are living idle lives, refusing to work and meddling in other people’s business.

And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,

So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore.

So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin.

Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.

For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life,

We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.

Don’t be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.
